Pregnancy is a journey filled with milestones, but few are as important—or as nerve-wracking—as the Anomaly Scan, commonly known here in Kerala as the TIFFA Scan (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies).
It usually happens between the 18th and 22nd weeks. For many parents, this is the moment "it gets real." You get to see your baby's face, hands, and feet in incredible detail.
But medically, this scan is about much more than just cute pictures. At Magnus Diagnostics, this is where we perform a head-to-toe medical checkup of your unborn child.
Why Is This Scan So Important?
Unlike the earlier scans that just checked the heartbeat or due date, the TIFFA scan is a Detailed Structural Survey.
We are looking for physical abnormalities. While 95% of babies are born perfectly healthy (Alhamdulillah/Thank God), identifying issues now helps doctors plan the safest delivery and care for your baby.
What Exactly Do We Check?
Our Radiologists, led by our Senior Radiologist, systematically examine over 20 different data points. Here is what we look at:
1. The Brain & Spine
We measure the head circumference and check the brain structure to rule out conditions like fluid buildup (Hydrocephalus). We also check the entire spine to ensure there are no gaps (Spina Bifida).
2. The Heart
This is crucial. We verify that the heart has four chambers and that the major arteries are pumping blood correctly. Early detection of heart defects can be life-saving.
3. Face & Limbs
We look for the presence of both arms and legs. We also check the face carefully to rule out a Cleft Lip, which is a common concern.
4. Organs
We check that the stomach, kidneys, and bladder are visible and functioning correctly.
5. Placenta & Fluid
We locate the placenta (to make sure it's not blocking the cervix) and measure the amniotic fluid to ensure the baby has enough cushion to move and grow.
How to Prepare (No, You Don't Need a Full Bladder!)
A common myth is that you need to drink liters of water. Good news: For a 20-week scan, you usually don't need an uncomfortably full bladder because the baby is big enough to be seen clearly.
- Eat Well: Have a good meal before coming. Sometimes, a little sugar (like a chocolate or juice) helps wake the baby up so they move around!
- Dress Comfortably: Wear a two-piece outfit (kurta/leggings) so it's easy to expose your tummy.
- Bring Support: Your husband or a family member is welcome. Seeing the baby on the big screen is a memory you will want to share.
Common Questions from Moms
"What if the baby is in the wrong position?"
It happens! If the baby is curled up or facing away, we might not see the heart or face clearly. Don't worry. We will just ask you to take a walk, have a sweet drink, and try again in 20 minutes.
"Will this scan hurt the baby?"
Absolutely not. Ultrasounds use sound waves, not radiation. They are completely safe for you and the little one.
"Can you tell the gender?"
While medically possible, please remember that Gender Determination is illegal in India (PCPNDT Act). We strictly follow the law and cannot disclose the sex of the baby.
Peace of Mind Matters
We know this scan causes anxiety. "Is everything okay?" is the only question on your mind.
At Magnus Diagnostics, we prioritize clarity and kindness. We will talk you through what we see on the screen, explaining things simply, so you leave our centre feeling informed and reassured.
