Abdominal Pain After Ozempic: When Doctors Advise an Ultrasound

The world is buzzing about "Weight Loss Injections" like Ozempic (Semaglutide) and Mounjaro. We are seeing many patients in Kerala starting these treatments to manage diabetes and obesity.

While the results can be amazing, there is a side effect that worries many doctors: Severe Abdominal Pain.

At Magnus Diagnostics, we want you to succeed in your health journey safely. Here is what you need to know about "The Ozempic Stomach" and when to get a scan.

The "Gut Slowdown"

These medicines work by telling your brain you are full and physically slowing down your stomach (Gastric Emptying).

  • Normal: Mild nausea, feeling full quickly.
  • A Warning Sign: Severe pain that radiates to your back.

The Two Main Risks

1. The Gallbladder (Gallstones)

Rapid weight loss is the #1 trigger for gallstones. When you lose fat quickly, your liver pumps extra cholesterol into your bile, which can turn into stones.

  • The Feeling: Sudden, sharp pain in the upper right tummy, often after a fatty meal.

2. The Pancreas (Pancreatitis)

This is rare but serious. The medication can sometimes irritate the pancreas.

  • The Feeling: Constant, boring pain in the middle of your stomach that goes straight through to your back. You might vomit and feel feverish.

When to Book an Ultrasound?

You don't need a scan for a little nausea. That is expected. However, see your doctor and ask for an Abdominal Scan if:

  1. The pain is severe and doesn't go away.
  2. You are vomiting repeatedly.
  3. Your eyes or skin look yellow (Jaundice).

Ultrasound vs. CT Scan: Which One?

First Step: Ultrasound Abdomen

This is the best initial test. It uses sound waves (no radiation) to clearly show Gallstones. It is quick, safe, and definitive for stone issues.

Second Step: CT Scan

If the Ultrasound is normal but the pain is severe, we might do a CT Scan. This is better at seeing the Pancreas and checking for inflammation (Pancreatitis).

Summary

Don't suffer in silence thinking "this pain is the price of weight loss." It isn't. If your body is hurting, listen to it. A simple 10-minute scan can ensure your weight loss journey stays safe and healthy.
