It starts with a dull ache in your lower back. Then, it shoots down your leg like an electric shock. Sometimes, your foot feels numb or heavy, like it doesn't belong to you.
In Kerala, we often call this ‘Iduppu Vedana’ (Hip Pain) or ‘Narambu Vali’ (Nerve Pain). Medically, it is most likely Sciatica.
At Magnus Diagnostics, we see hundreds of patients who are confused: "Doctor, my leg hurts. Why are scanning my back?"
This guide explains the connection between your spine and your leg, and when you need a scan.
The Connection: Why Does My Leg Hurt?
The Sciatic Nerve is the longest nerve in your body. It starts in your lower back (Lumbar Spine), runs through your hips, and goes all the way down to your toes.
Think of your spine like a stacked building. Between each bone (vertebra), there is a soft cushion called a Disc.
- The Problem: If a disc slips out of place (Herniated Disc), it pinches the root of the Sciatic Nerve.
- The Result: Your back might hurt a little, but your leg hurts a LOT. The pain travels along the nerve path.
Determining The Severity: The "Red Flags"
Most back pain goes away with rest and physiotherapy. But how do you know if it is serious?
See a Doctor Immediately if:
- Foot Drop: You cannot lift your big toe or drag your foot when walking.
- Saddle Anesthesia: Numbness in your private parts or inner thighs.
- Bladder/Bowel Issues: You cannot control passing urine or stool (This is a medical emergency called Cauda Equina Syndrome).
- Pain at Night: Pain that wakes you up from sleep.
MRI Lumbar Spine: The Gold Standard
X-rays are great for bones, but they cannot see nerves or discs. That is why an MRI Lumbar Spine is the only way to see what is really happening.
What We Look For in the Scan:
- Disc Bulge / Prolapse: We can see exactly which disc has slipped and how many millimeters it is pressing on the nerve.
- Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal that chokes the nerves (Common in older patients).
- Nerve Root Compression: We can trace the nerve to see exactly where it is being crushed.
"Do I need Surgery?"
Not always. In fact, 90% of our patients get better with medication and physio once the MRI identifies the exact level of the problem. The scan helps the physiotherapist target the right area. Surgery is usually the last resort.
Patient FAQ
"Can I get a CT Scan instead?"
A CT scan is okay for fractures, but for nerve pain, it is blurry. An MRI gives crystal-clear images of the soft nerves and discs.
"I have metal in my body (Pacemaker/Implants). Can I have an MRI?"
Tell us first. Most modern orthopedic implants (Titanium) are MRI safe. However, Pacemakers and Cochlear Implants may not be. Our team at Magnus will safety-check every implant before you enter the room.
Don't Ignore the Numbness
Pain is a warning. Numbness is a sign that the nerve is losing function. If you have persistent leg pain or numbness, finding the root cause early prevents permanent nerve damage.
